In Athens, Tehran or the French suburbs, popular anger continues to erupt. Anthropologist Alain Bertho follows the tracks of these episodes on the Net, establishing a global map of a symptom of the times.
Jean-Marie Durand for lesinrocks.com: „The present is a period of riots,“ you write in your new book. In what respects does this interpretive lens centered on riots tell us something about our world, our time?
Alain Bertho: In the course of the last two centuries, there have been three sequences of violent political mobilizations in Europe or the world: The 1848 Springtime of the Peoples, the insurrectional movements that followed October 1917, the 1960’s and ’70s which have remained „the ’68 years.“ We incontrovertibly entered a period of that kind a few years ago. The singularity of what we are living through is double: geographically more spread out, this sequence also seems longer-lasting than the preceding ones and is in a certain sense „invisible,“ since there’s no common and clear political meaning to these innumerable outbursts of popular anger. There is obviously no global revolution, whether political, social, or cultural, brewing there.
Why do the riots in the French suburbs, in Guadeloupe, Athens, Karachi, Lhasa, Teheran … have a common message for us in spite of their localized histories in different political contexts?

Friedens-Demonstration am 8. Oktober 2016 in Berlin
„Die Waffen nieder – Kooperation statt NATO-Konfrontation – Abrüstung statt Sozialabbau“
Mit einem gemeinsamen Aufruf fordern die Friedensbündnisse der „Kooperation für den Frieden“, des „Bundesausschusses Friedensratschlag“ und der „Berliner Friedenskoordination“ die Öffentlichkeit auf, am 8. Oktober 2016 in Berlin gegen die aktuelle Politik der Bundesregierung auf die Straße zu gehen.
Die Demonstration am 8. Oktober ist als als Auftakt für weitere Aktionen der Friedensbewegung im kommenden Bundestagswahlkampf gedacht. Die Friedensbewegung wirbt für ihre Aktion um breite Unterstützung von Organisationen, Gewerkschaften und Initiativen, damit die Friedensfrage wieder zu einem zentralen Punkt der politischen Auseinandersetzung in unserem Land wird.
Es folgt der gemeinsame Aufruf.

Krieg ist illegal
Vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender ökologischer Krisen und trotz der Tatsache, dass große Teile der Weltbevölkerung weiterhin extremer Armut, inhumanen Arbeitsbedingungen und wachsenden sozialen Spannungen ausgeliefert sind, werden für das Militär weltweit jährlich fast 1000 Milliarden Euro ausgegeben.
Der militärisch industrielle Komplex einiger weniger G8 Länder ist für den überwiegenden Teil dieser Ausgaben verantwortlich, welche unkalkulierbare soziale und ökologische Konsequenzen haben.
Die ungerechte Verteilung von Ressourcen, zunehmend kontrolliert von großen multinationalen Konzernen, die globale Schuldenpolitik sowie grundlegend unfaire internationale Handelsbedingungen wären letztendlich ohne militärische Sicherheit nicht aufrechtzuerhalten. In vielen Ländern wird das Militär zudem zur Unterdrückung der kritischen Opposition eingesetzt.

Turkey’s Baffling Coup

Military coups – successful or otherwise – follow a predictable pattern in Turkey. Political groups – typically Islamists – deemed by soldiers to be antagonistic to Kemal Atatürk’s vision of a secular Turkey gain increasing power. Tensions rise, often accompanied by violence on the streets. Then the military steps in, exercising what the soldiers claim is their constitutional power to restore order and secular principles.
This time, it was very different. Thanks to a series of sham trials targeting secularist officers, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had managed to reconfigure the military hierarchy and place his own people at the top. While the country has been rocked by a series of terrorist attacks and faces a souring economy, there was no inkling of unrest in the military or opposition to Erdogan. On the contrary, Erdogan’s recent reconciliation with Russia and Israel, together with his apparent desire to pull back from an active role in the Syrian civil war, must have been a relief to Turkey’s top brass.
