May 8, 2020, Munich, Bavaria, Germany: Demonstrating under the banner of Gewalt an Frauen hat System (Violence Against Women has a System), protesters from Frauenstreik, offenes Frauentreffen, and the Sara kurdischer Frauenrat assembled at Munich’s Stachus to demonstrate against femicide. During the demo, the group read the names and situations of some of the victims of domestic violence and spousal murders and explained how the Coronavirus lockdowns imprisoned victims with their abusers and eventual killers. Coincidentally, Hungary blocked the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, designed to define violence crimes against women. Hungary’s refusal was explained as the convention promoting “destructive gender ideologies†and “illegal migrationâ€. Hungary originally signed the convention in 2014 which provided a definition of gender and gender-based violence, as well as female genital mutilation, marital rape and forced marriage.
